Tackling Worry: Lessons from the Beach

It was a spur of the moment decision that filled me with both excitement and exhilaration. As my husband came out of his office, he casually mentioned that he is taking off the next week from work, which was a delightful surprise. Knowing that my husband would not truly relax if we stayed home, I felt a wave of excitement wash over me. Without wasting a second, I eagerly took to my computer and began searching for an oceanside hotel on the beautiful beaches of Ocean City, Maryland, where the sun-kissed beach called to us. Anticipating the usual fully-booked rooms during this popular season, I was overjoyed to discover a spacious room available on the ninth floor, with a stunning view facing the ocean, where we could enjoy the sound of the waves crashing against the shore. With a few swift clicks, it was booked, and the thought of our spontaneous getaway filled me with pure joy and anticipation for the memories we would create there.

As excitement welled within me, I invited my parents to come along on this much-needed journey. My mom instantly said yes, and we began the delightful duty of planning our vacation trying to figure out what we would take on this short-noticed vacation. No sense in trying to lose weight this time. The tight fitting clothes will have to do. I could already envision the laughter we would share and the memories we would create along the way.

Upon our arrival, we were welcomed by views so stunning from our balcony that I half-expected a documentary crew to show up and film my reaction. The seagulls were singing right at us—either that or they were planning a noisy protest about our snacks! Every morning I got the fly-by, birds eye view look from at least one of these adorable passerby’s as I was enjoying my breakfast on the balcony.

As the vacation went on, I learned a lot of lessons about myself. The first one being I worry too much, constantly overthinking every little detail of my life. Nothing new there, but during this time away from my usual routine, I found moments of stillness that encouraged me to reflect. In those quiet moments, I realized that God was teaching me to cast every one of my worries onto Him, to release the burdens I had been carrying for so long. I began to understand that worrying would not change the outcome; instead, it only drained my spirit. Each sunrise brought a renewed sense of clarity and a reminder to embrace the peace only God can give.

Embracing Peace in the Midst of Worry

Oftentimes, when we are on a road of negative thinking and worry, it is difficult to find peace amongst the chaos in our minds. We find ourselves trapped in a relentless cycle of anxious thoughts, where each worry compounds the last, making it feel as though there is no escape from the overwhelming noise. We don’t want to be anxious and tied up with worry, but our minds just won’t cooperate with our desire for peace. Instead, they spin a web of concerns that cloud our judgment and obscure the clarity we so desperately seek. It can seem as if we are walking through a fog, where every step forward feels burdened by the weight of our incessant thoughts, pulling us deeper into a realm of uncertainty and fear. Finding peace in such a storm requires not just a wish for calm, but a concerted effort to change our mindset by meditating on the promises of God.

Philippians 4:6-7 in the Message Bible says:

I love this verse in the Message Bible. As we pray and give God our concerns, pouring out our hearts with honesty and transparency, we can sense His presence envelop us in comfort. Before we know it, He will give us wholeness and a peace that everything will come together for good, even when circumstances seem overwhelming. This deep, abiding peace will quiet our hearts and settle us down, both in our minds and our bodies, allowing us to navigate the challenges of life with grace and hope. In those moments of stillness, we find the reassurance that we are held in His loving embrace, and that no matter the situation, there is a greater purpose unfolding.

How Do I Obtain His Peace

To experience the peace of God, we must focus on God’s presence, realizing He is always with us. This, in turn, helps us see beyond our immediate struggles, reassuring us that we are never alone and encouraging us to trust in His perfect plan for us. As we deepen our relationship with the Creator, we experience peace in prayer and meditating on His word. Focusing on God creates a space where we can listen for His whispers of love and wisdom amidst the noise going on in our minds.

Isaiah 26:3 AMP says:

When we keep our minds focused on God and not our circumstances, He will guard our hearts and our minds keeping us at peace when things around us are screaming otherwise. In moments of chaos and uncertainty, redirecting our thoughts towards His promises can anchor our souls, preventing us from being controlled by fear and worry. This peace that surpasses all understanding wraps around us like a fortress, enabling us to face challenges with confidence and resilience, firmly rooted in our faith. As we endure trials, fearful thoughts, and worry, we discover that our reliance on Him provides not just comfort but also strength to navigate the stormy seas of our circumstances, reminding us that His presence is our ultimate refuge.

To sum this up, here is what we need to do to change our negative, worry-filled mind into a peaceful mind:

  1. Believe in God’s promise of peace.
  2. Pray with thanksgiving
  3. Think about things that are good, pure, and Godly.
  4. Believe that He cares for you and has your best interest at heart

Bible Verses For a Peaceful Mind

Sometimes it is hard to concentrate when our minds are racing uncontrollably. Below are some Bible verses to help get you started on a road of healing your anxious mind.

Psalm 34:4

“I sought the Lord, and He heard me, And delivered me from all my fears.”

When we cry out to God, He hears us and takes away our fears.

Psalm 91:4-6

“He will cover you with His feathers, and under His wings, you will find refuge; His faithfulness will be your shield and rampart. you will not fear the terror of night, nor the arrow that flies by day, nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness, nor the plague that destroys at midday.”

This verse assures us that seeking God can lead to deliverance from fear and anxiety in our lives. It provides peace to the anxious heart.

Psalm 119:50

“My comfort in my suffering is this: Your promise preserves my life.”

The promises of God act as a life-line to those who have an anxious or worried heart.

Isaiah 40:31

“But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.”

This verse teaches us that as we wait on God to answer our prayers, He will renew our strength. We can rise above our problems and let God work things out for our good.

Isaiah 41:10

“Fear not, for I am with you; Be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you,
Yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.”

Through this verse, we see God offering strength and help to His people. In the midst of anxious thoughts, this verse can be a ray of hope knowing that God’s presence and unwavering help is ours.

John 14:27

“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not be afraid.”

God promises us a different kind of peace, one that is not just an absence of conflict but a deep, abiding sense of calm that fills our hearts and minds. It is a peace that goes beyond human comprehension, providing hope and strength when we face trials and tribulations. With this assurance, we can find comfort and reassurance, knowing that we are supported by a God that understands our struggles and offers us peace which withstands all storms.

Peter 5:7

“Casting all your anxieties on Him because He cares for you.”

Anxiety often tricks us into believing that our worries are insurmountable. This verse reminds us to leave everything that concerns us in God’s hands. He is there for us and will not disappoint us.

Conclusion

As God was teaching me to cast my worries and concerns onto Him, I began to feel a sense of peace wash over me, filling my heart with reassurance and comfort. I realized that we don’t have to stay trapped in this vicious cycle of fear that often grips us, pulling us into a state of despair and anxiety. Reflecting on this truth, I understood that there is hope for the anxious one crying out for deliverance. Each prayer and moment of surrender can become a step towards freedom, allowing us to not only release our burdens but also to embrace the joy of living in faith.

As we pray, and turn to God, trusting that He will provide for our daily needs, and protect us from danger, peace will begin to fill our anxious hearts and give us hope.
