Do you feel bound by something? No matter how hard you try, the bondage engulfs you in a vice-grip and you can’t seem to break free. I want to share with you how to find freedom in Christ.
With the Fourth of July weekend upon us, I thought a lot about freedom and liberty. I realized as a Christian, there is a freedom you and I can truly walk in that can bring joy and peace. We no longer have to walk around living defeated. Our past fears, mistakes, and regrets are covered by the blood of the Lamb.
“So if the Son makes you free, then you are unquestionably free.”
Jesus has broken our chains and set us free!
According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, freedom is defined as: Liberation from slavery, restraint, or the power of another.
When we ask Jesus into our heart and lives, the power of our past is broken. What held us captive no longer has any power over us.
What Am I Free From?
- You are free from the power of sin
- Free from control
- Free from fear and anxiety
- Free from worry
- Free from legalism
- Free from comparing yourself with someone else
- Free from shame
- Free from past mistakes
- Free from guilt
You are free to be you! Now I’m not saying to jump on the bandwagon of the “you do you” campaign. What I am saying is God has set you free from anything the enemy has used to hold you back from accomplishing God’s will and purpose for your life! This is important for us to know and put into memory.

An Eye Opening Experience
I spent many years living in fear and worry. When I had kids, it seemed like my anxiety exploded as I worried about whether I was doing things right, the health of my children, my health, and whether ministry was messing them up. I was in bondage to my thoughts and fears. One day, during one of our homeschooling lessons, I looked up the word bondage in the dictionary and was astonished. According to the Webster, bondage is:
The condition of a slave; servitude. The condition of being involuntarily subject to a power, force, or influence.
After reading the meaning of bondage, my eyes became open to what I was allowing the enemy to do in my life. By being bound to worry and fear, I was being held captive by it. I was not walking in the freedom Christ came to give me. The bondage had taken over my thoughts and my life and was controlling me. Every decision and action was made out of fear. I was miserable.
Liberty To The Captives
I’m sure I’m not the only one who has felt bound by something. There are many things that can hold us captive. While you may not struggle with fear and worry, you could struggle with bitterness, jealousy, over-achieving, or shame. You may have tried to overcome in your own strength, but every time you make progress, you find yourself being pushed back down with no hope of ever overcoming. It is hard to break free and walk in the freedom Christ has given you.
“He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound.”
As I read this verse, I imagine a person chained by their hands and feet to a dripping, cold, wet brick wall. You know, like a dungeon. Every time the person moves forward to gain freedom, they are pulled back to the brick wall.
Their wrists and ankles are red and swollen with opened sores from pulling on the chains and trying to break free. They begin to think to themselves: “If only I can get out of these chains and be free again. I wish things can change for me.” A victim mentality begins to set in and they begin to believe they will never gain freedom. Hopelessness rises as they ponder their seeming defeat. But then something amazing happens. At their last attempt to find freedom, praises begin to erupt from their mouth and the Light of Glory appears and breaks the chains of bondage and sets the prisoner free!
How Do I Find Freedom?
Praise and worship have been a mainstay in my life. When I find myself regressing back into my fearful thought patterns, I turn music on and begin to worship. Freedom can be gained by our broken hallelujahs.
We do not realize the power of our praise. Battles are won on our knees. Doors that were once closed will suddenly open. Miracles begin to occur. Things that once held us captive are broken! Things happen when we look to God and begin to praise Him.
When we rid ourselves of us and focus on the goodness of the One who made us, chains will begin to loosen and fall. God is the only one who can break every bondage in your life and cause you to walk in the freedom He came to give you.
Another way to find freedom in Christ is by prayer and reading God’s Word. Find scriptures that relate to what you are facing and pray that the Holy Spirit guides you in wisdom and truth.
Talking with someone about your struggles can help bring things to light and give you someone who will stand and pray with you. Just be sure the person you share with can be trusted and won’t go around gossiping about what you have confided in them.
Rhonda H. Kelley quotes:
“In Christ, there is freedom from bondage. Believers are no longer slaves; they are free-not through their own merit but through God’s redeeming grace.”
Don’t keep believing the lies satan may be speaking to you that are allowing you to stay bound. The chains are broken through the blood of Jesus.
Conclusion
Christ came to set us free. We do not need to walk around defeated and bound to the things that hold us captive and keep us from fulfilling God’s plan for our lives. Each one of us can be overcomer’s and walk in liberty. The shame and guilt we carry from past mistakes is covered under the blood of Jesus. No longer can the past hold you captive. We can walk in the freedom that is ours today!
